A Newbies’ Guide to Motorcycles – 6 Ways You Can Stay Safe on The Road
How new are you to motorcycles? We ran through several points to consider to keep you safe on the road. Read ahead.
Can Two Ride Together?
Although a motorcycle can handle two or more people, the model you own may be quite small. Make note whether it’d be a tight fit for two people to be on at once. If so, driving the bike would be dangerous, as one of you could lose balance and fall off.
Watch the Weather
You don’t need us to tell you that driving on wet roads isn’t the safest. An experienced driver would know all the tips and tricks to handle wet ground. However, you might not.
Not only do you need to make note of the rain, but keep in mind whether there would be fog or not. There’d likely be mist early in the morning – your vision would be obstructed.
How’s Your State of Mind?
Don’t hit the road in a bad mood. When driving, you could make a rash decision and get into an accident. In line with this point, you’re advised to not go on long journeys when you’re in an easily distracted state of mind either. You could be very excited about something, not letting you focus.
If you’re super new to driving bikes, balance may be something you’re struggling with. It’s all about technique. That being said, a motorcycle steering damper kit would help. It’d improve the vehicle’s stability.
Don’t Always Rely on The Mirrors
One of the biggest mistakes you could make is relying on the mirrors all the time. Sometimes, you just have to keep your head up and look around. This is especially true when changing lanes – look over your shoulders to make sure nothing would be in your way.
Inspect the Bike
You should assess the vehicle carefully before riding it. What should you keep an eye for? Check its tire pressure along with its lights and mirrors. If it’s night and its headlights stop working, you’ll be in serious trouble.
There may be an auxiliary light on its front. Ensure that you’ve latched it on properly, as glare could be an issue otherwise.
Unfortunately, some things can’t be checked with the naked eye. There may be something wrong inside of its engine. You don’t want the vehicle breaking down in the middle of the road, so you’d regularly take it to the mechanic.
Driving a motorcycle is not hard. However, there are quite a few things to consider if you want to stay safe on the road. From all the points talked about, one of the most important things would be to drive in a clear mind. If your head is somewhere else, you could be easily distracted and get into an accident. You’re advised to drive when the weather’s not great either. The worst thing to do would be to hit the road when it’s foggy out.
